Although we are happy to repair individual faults, we do recommend that you consider a full refurbishment as it is likely that other problems will develop, and we only provide a warranty for the fault repaired.

* Major parts include: motors, camshaft, pickup assembly and cartridge. If any major parts are required, we will contact you and advise accordingly.

rEFURBISHMENT
£495 plus major parts*
(3 month warranty)

A full refurbishment involves removal of all components from the main chassis i.e. printed circuit board, record lifting assembly, wiring loom, motors, etc. All the old lubricants are removed from each component, followed by everything being ultra-sonically cleaned. Once cleaned, all the components are individually inspected before being re-lubricated, re-assembled with new micro switches, full alignment and full test. Each refurbishment takes approximately 6 hours.

WHAT CARRIAGE DO YOU HAVE?

There are primarily two types of carriage used in NSM jukeboxes:

SHURE CARRIAGE

The Shure Carriage is recognisable by a square/silver tonearm assembly and a black motor located under a silver motor on the right-hand side of the carriage. Shure carriages were fitted into the E series, ES, ESII and ESIII technology jukeboxes like Prestige E120/160, City, early City II’s, Festival’s, Prestige ES160 and other models up until around 1983/84.

ORTOFON CARRIAGE

The Ortofon Carriage is recognisable by a black/round tonearm assembly and grey plastic covered motor located under a silver motor on the right-hand side of the carriage. Ortofon carriages were fitted to later ESII technology like City II and Prestige II, plus ESIII (240i and Satellite 200) and ESIV jukeboxes (Concert 240, City IV, Galaxy 200 etc) from 1984 onwards.

Please note: Unfortunately we do not repair NSM jukeboxes with carriages that have a single motor.

WHY IS MY CARRIAGE BROKEN?

The vinyl jukeboxes that we repair range from the mid-seventies up to the late eighties. Even the later vinyl jukes like the Galaxy 200 are now approaching 30 years old with some of the earlier models like the Prestige 120 being over 40 years old.

Like anything mechanical, carriages need to be maintained and most now could do with a full refurbishment. The main issue is that the lubricants that were used during the original manufacture are drying out and becoming sticky (almost like toffee) and is therefore causing parts of the mechanism not to move smoothly, and in extreme cases to not to move at all.

Some of the most common problems with the carriages are:

  • record playing slow – sometimes it gets better after it has played for a while

  • moves slowly or not at all

  • scans left and right continuously without selecting a record

  • moves fully to the left-hand side of the rack and then stops

  • does not play the ‘B’ side of record selections

  • does not load record and keeps moving from right to left

  • loads record and then immediately unloads it again without playing

WHY CHOOSE OUR UNIQUE

FULL REFURBISHMENT SERVICE?

Here is a before and after of a complete carriage refurbishment. As you can see, the carriage is as good new by the end of the process. As far as we are aware, we are the only company in the world who offer this service, stripping it down to a bare chassis, removing the old lubricants and building it back up from scratch. We have the experience and knowledge needed to successfully strip these beautiful machines down to their component parts and put them back together again so that they play effortlessly for many more years to come. Don't forget, all of our work comes with a warranty for your peace of mind.

SHIPPING YOUR CARRIAGE

We are proud to have produced custom protective packaging which we use to return every carriage to ensure it arrives back to you safely. We are pleased to now offer you the option of purchasing our packaging on its own so you can use it to send the unit in to our workshop for repair or refurbishment. While we can't be held responsible for any damage that may occur in transit, we have not yet experienced any broken arrivals using our packaging and therefore we strongly recommend you request our packaging and use it to ship your carriage into us - especially if you have a shure carriage. The cartridges on shure carriages are extremely fragile and rare, and they are very expensive to replace if they arrive broken.

If you'd like to request an empty carriage box, please contact us with your details and we will be happy to arrange this. The cost of the box itself is £20, and is simply paid before we complete the repair instead of after. The only extra expense will be the shipping to get it to you, but we can assure you that is much cheaper than a new shure cartridge so is worth considering!

Below is a video demonstrating how to pack your carriage in our custom packaging when it arrives.

Don't forget to include a Repair Sheet!

TECHNOLOGY TYPE

In addition to the two types of carriages described above, there are also different technology types used across the range and these are:

  • E series – Shure

  • ES series – Shure

  • ESII – Shure & Ortofon

  • ES III – Shure and Ortofon

  • ESIV – Ortofon

E, ES and ESII carriages are interchangeable, however you cannot use an ESII carriage in an ESIII or ESIV or vice-versa. A simple rule applies here, if in doubt – don't!

Call us instead; we will be happy to assist you.
